Cosmetic Leg Lengthening Surgery

In today’s society, being shorter than average can negatively affect an individual in numerous ways. A number of studies have revealed that shorter individuals often face bullying during their childhood, and then, although it looks different, it continues into their adult years. Research has proven that those shorter in stature are not imagining their perception of inequality. Taller individuals are often afforded advantages in the workplace, being perceived as having greater leadership skills compared to their shorter counterparts. Height has even been linked to higher salary potential, proving that the struggle is real for those shorter than average.

The good news is that if your height is standing in the way of you achieving your potential, you now have options with cosmetic leg lengthening. At Scheer Medical Wellness, in a little more than an hour.

Dr. Scheer can perform the procedure, and you will be only months away from achieving a taller frame.

The bones that are altered during the leg lengthening
procedure are the thigh bone (femur) and the shin
bone (tibia).

How Does Leg Lengthening Cosmetic Surgery Work?

The leg lengthening procedure takes advantage of the body’s ability to generate new bone and other essential tissues like ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves. The process is done in three steps:

01
A surgery called an osteotomy is performed
Involves strategically cutting the bone that requires lengthening, and then special medical devices (adjustable Precice nails) are used to stabilize these two sections as new bone forms in the gap. After the initial surgery, the patient stays in the hospital for several days and the bones are allowed to rest during what is called the latency period.
02
The next phase begins after the bones have rested for about a week

The next phase, called “distraction,” begins after the bones have rested for about a week. Over the course of several months, the implanted nails are adjusted on a daily basis to gradually pull apart the separated bones.

These special nails have an internal system of gears and magnets that respond to an external remote control (ERC) hand-held device . This device is placed on the area of the implant, which activates this system, and the nail is automatically lengthened to the pre-programmed length. Usually, the patient or a caregiver uses the ERC at specific intervals which prompts growth of about 1 mm each day.

As length is added, the muscles, skin, nerves, etc. also slowly adapt to the changes. The body goes to work creating regenerate bone (new bone) to repair the damage, thereby filling in the gap between the two bones and ultimately lengthening the limb.

03
the consolidation phase
After the bone reaches the target length, it must have sufficient time to heal and harden (calcify) before weight can be applied. This is called the consolidation phase and usually takes four to six months, depending on the nature of the surgery.

What Are The Benefits Of This Technique?

Compared to the traditional surgical techniques for increasing limb lengths, the ERC-controlled precise nail technique offers many advantages, including:

What Does Recovery After Leg Lengthening Surgery Look Like?

After the procedure, patients have consistent, frequent visits with the surgeon to monitor the progress of the added length, bone regeneration, and consolidation. This is to ensure that the process is moving along at an even and steady pace, and not too fast or slow. The surgeon may change the adjustment instructions to ensure the process is progressing as desired.

The patient will get around with the help of a walker or crutches and will follow the surgeon’s directives about when and how much weight to put on their limbs. During this phase, patients will attend physical therapy up to five times a week.
