Imran Rafi Ahmed Punekar, MD

Director of anesthesia and pain management

Dr. Imran Punekar is an Interventional Pain Management specialist and Anesthesiologist. He attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City and graduated from Villanova University with Honors degrees in Biology and Bioethics.  He was then awarded a Fulbright scholarship to Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the U.A.E. where he studied and taught Bioethics.  He completed an MD/PhD from the University of Rochester with a PhD in Neuroscience studying Impulse Control, Motivation, Reward, and Dopamine Circuitry in the setting of Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease.  During this time he completed advanced rotations in many fields of surgery including 8 months of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.  He then completed a Post-Doctoral Research fellowship with the Division of Plastic Surgery, during which time he authored several publications including one for the cover of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.  He subsequently completed his residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Rochester and finished a fellowship in Interventional Pain Management at NYU Langone.

At Scheer Medical Wellness, Dr. Imran Punekar has taken the role of Director of Anesthesiology and serves as an Interventional Pain Specialist.  His goal at the center is to provide comprehensive care to patients preparing for, undergoing, and recovering from surgery.  This includes detailed pre-operative assessments and individualized patient counseling as well as specially tailored intra-operative management including a variety of advanced Anesthesiology techniques including Epidural and Spinal Anesthesia, Regional Anesthesia, selective Nerve Blocks, Radiofrequency Ablation, and Peripheral Nerve Stimulation.

His primary goal in treating pain is the restoration of function and helping patients regain the ability to do the things that are most meaningful in their lives.  Dr. Punekar’s focus is always on helping the patient build stability and strength as the pillars on which they will be able to grow in their journey and make progress.  An illness, injury, accident, or surgery can instantly transform a patient, making it difficult to participate in the life that they had before and isolating them from who they used to be.  Dr. Punekar’s goal is to help patients process these life changes meaningfully and help give them the ability to get back on the path to becoming themselves again.

Dr. Punekar treats pain by performing interventional pain procedures.  Often these include diagnostic and therapeutic injections to treat pain arising from the spine in the neck and the back.  However, Dr. Punekar’s philosophy is that the patient should quickly be advanced to a longer-lasting treatment as well as a program of strengthening that will help them manage their own pain for decades to come.

Dr. Punekar is well versed in the latest Interventional Pain techniques including Spinal Cord Stimulation, Peripheral Nerve Stimulation, Multifidus Restoration, Radiofrequency Nerve Ablations, and the use of platelet-rich plasma.  He has completed certifications in many of the latest breakthrough treatments and is keen to find ways to treat patients when other therapies have failed.  He relies on an innovative spirit, a background in Neuroscience, and a passion for building a relationship with each and every patient.
